Here’s an example of a job description:
We are looking for a friendly carer for a very sociable client of ours in her 40’s. She has Cerebral Palsy and lives 30 minutes north of London by train. This client has a great sense of humour and loves going out to gigs and socialising. She is also a talented artist and exhibits her work. Her Mum lives nearby and is happy to help out when needed although the client likes to be independent, with the help of her carer. This client has travelled and enjoys life to its full; she goes to a day centre twice weekly so the carer in this position will have plenty of free time.
The successful applicant must be a driver, like dogs and cats and ideally share the client’s interests which include art and travel. Duties would involve some personal care, help with dressing, light housework, shopping, cooking, and accompanying the client when she goes out. It is important in this position that the carer has good spoken and written English.
Testimonial:
“I have to be selfish here and say I love the ‘pace’ of the care work. It’s slow, and needs to be. In fact, patience and understanding is probably the most important attribute you can have as a carer. Doing the simplest things like cooking a nice meal, keeping the place tidy or helping the client feel more independent means so much, so taking the time with these is really important. I have never been the ‘housewifey’ type but have been surprised at how enjoyable and rewarding simple things like cooking, shopping or driving someone around can be, especially when it is making such a difference to someone’s life.”!
