If you are a successful applicant you will be asked to come to our 4 day (free) training course which runs from Monday to Thursday weekly at our offices which are located just 20 minutes north of London by train.
We will pick you up from Hatfield or St Albans train station either Sunday before you start training or the Monday morning of training.
We provide you with transfers, accommodation, breakfast and lunch during training. We pick you up from our ENA house in the morning and drop you back in the afternoon, evenings are yours to spend as you please.
It costs us a lot of money to train each applicant - we would not spend the money if we were not committed to placing you in work as soon as possible. We have approximately 130 clients on our books so we always have work available. It is very unusual for applicants to leave our training course without a work commitment.
During training a care coordinator will give you details of a job they think would suit you; they will provide a description of the person, what your day entails and where that job is located.
From then, the care coordinator will be your point of contact, any questions or concerns you can always contact them.
On Monday (day 1) you will need to bring:
- Any original documents that haven’t been seen.
- Your driving license
- All the addresses you've lived at in the last 5 years, including postcodes and £42 for a UK police check
During the training course you will:
Day 1:
- Learn about ENA and meet the staff
- Learn about different types of disabilities that affect our clients
- Do a driving familiarisation session; many of our carers are from other countries, it is important to ensure you understand the British road rules before you start driving clients around. We pay for you to take a driving instructor for a 20 minute drive. He must deem you a safe and confident driver for us to place you into a driving position
- Apply for your UK police check (₤42)
Day 2:
- Understand our health and safety policies and discuss hygiene
- Talk about effective communication
- Learn basic first aid and emergency procedures
Day 3:
- How to care for your client includes personal care training
- Discuss issues to be aware of
Day 4:
- Learn about the spine and spinal cord
- Hands on practice – safe moving and handling techniques
The induction training course gives you a chance to adjust to learn new skills and ask heaps of questions so you feel prepared for your first day with your client.
For the first 24 hours working with your client the previous carer will stay with you and show you what they learnt over their 3 months and you will do the same for the carer who takes over from you when you leave.
The rest of your training is unique to the client, so you'll be trained on the job by your client. Your client is the best person to train you as they have had carers coming and going for years so they're used to it.
There is no pressure to know everything in your first day, or even your first week. It will take you a few weeks to learn the clients routine and adjust to their lifestyle, so enjoy it! |
