Here’s an example of a job description:

We are currently looking for a live-in carer for a young disabled client of ours who is in her late 20s and lives close to her parents, but who is keen to remain as independent as possible.  This client is interested in creative writing, going to the cinema, to the theatre, to live concerts and travelling.  She is sociable and often has friends round at her house.

Duties in this position include personal care, light housework and the client likes to help with shopping and cooking.  It is important that the successful applicant is a confident driver.  This client would ideally like a carer who is in much the same age group as her and who would enjoy fitting into her lifestyle.  The carer in this position would have her own room with an en-suite bathroom, a TV and stereo.

Testimonial:

“I have the pleasure of working with a person with a Spinal Injury. Since I had no experience it was harder than I first thought, but after a few weeks I had the routine down pat which was a great sense of achievement. I was a bit nervous about the bathroom duties but now showering and toileting is a new skill that I take a lot of pride in. My client likes to get out a lot but also enjoys quiet time to herself so my days are often varied, so I have to be flexible. Getting to know my client and learning about her disability is by far the best learning experience ever”!
